BD Machine is a relatively new machine shop located in Largo, Florida; owned and operated by two brothers, Justin Baklund and Matt Doom. They produce a little bit of everything – including parts for the aerospace, medical, and firearm industries.
How it Started: A few years ago, Justin had relocated from Minnesota to Florida and began working for a machine shop. Eventually his experience and drive lead him to taking over that business, formally establishing BD Machine on January 1, 2018. His brother, Matt Doom, joined him as a partner just one year later.
Background: These two brothers are no strangers to a machine shop. They grew up in Minnesota working in their father’s shop, learning the ins and outs of machining. Their father’s shop was a 45-minute drive from the Milltronic’s headquarters, so it is no surprise that their machine of choice is Milltronics. They learned to work on a Milltronics early on in their career. Justin liked working on Milltronics machines because of the interface and the user-friendly control.
Challenge: BD Machine was experiencing a surplus of jobs; however, their various brands of machines that they had acquired were continuously breaking down. Justin and Matt decided that it was time to replace these machines with newer and more reliable machines. They took into consideration their return on investment. Justin stated, “The money that we were losing due to the service on the older machines and the back-up of orders was more than the cost of buying a new machine.”
Solution: BD’s local Milltronics Distributor was U-Tech CNC and their Sales Representative, Patrick Shaver knew their needs and applications well. “Not only was the uptime of the machine super important to Justin and Matt,” Patrick explained, “but they also needed a machine that could be reliable enough and quick enough with cycle times to keep up with the surplus of production.”
Milltronics was the obvious machine of choice for BD Machine. After looking into the type of parts and production of BD Machine, Patrick knew that the VM-3018 was the best choice for them. The VM-3018 features a 30” x 18” table (table width matches the Y-travel), 20 hp spindle motor and a 10,000-rpm spindle. BD Machines ordered two Milltronics VM-3018’s.

“These machines are working great, and more spindles are turning. We are now able to keep up with the surplus of production orders. The cycle time for our parts has better rapid speed rates than the other machines in the shop. Working with U-Tech CNC has been great. Our rep Patrick is first-rate and was on the ball with everything, the entire time.”
